"I can use another cable to transfer pictures from a camera to my laptop?

I recently bought a Canon Digital camera and comes with a Canon IFC-400PCU interface cable. I saw that instead of using the supplied cable with the camera, the cable from my Western Digital hard drive fits into the slot and you can transfer photos from camera to my computer Portable. My question is: are there advantages of using the cable IFC-400 PCU cable on my WD hard drive? What is the little bump at the end of the IFC-400? I do not want too many cable clutter at home and prefer to use the hard drive cable for my camera if it works.

The package is a ferrite core, which is supposed to reduce interference with the signals in the cable. It is mainly a way of trying to justify the collection of $ 30 for a new cable. The other thread are functioning properly.
