What is the best camera / video camera to my Marine? Please help!?

My friend is ready for deployment the third time. He never had the opportunity to record their experience, if only a camera. This Christmas, I want to get him a camera video. One is small and compact, but not a piece of crap that break easily. A beautiful evening with the vision and want to make a video so it is definitely clear picture. Im tight money for $ 200 is my limit, and is growing. Below $ 150 would be ideal. IDon't want to spend lots of money but I will not be disappointed when you get there. So any suggestion on this?
