This is a Nikon D200 too advanced of a camera for a beginner photographer with digital SLR?
I see some really good deals used now because the Nikon D200 D300 is released. I wonder if this would be a better choice for the long term than the D40x or D80 for my first Nikon digital SLR, for durability. Any idea if it is too late to start? Or it could grow fast enough?
I think I can give you an idea of the difference. Nikon SLR I've used for years. Then I went digital with a D70 (the predecessor the D80). Later I added a D50 as a backup (Predecessor to the D40). Recently, I took the next jump and I bought a D200 used with caution. Yes, it's a fantastic camera and I am very happy to have given the stage. But a first digital camera, can be overwhelming. I got it for about two months and I'm still figuring out how to better use. The big difference as I see it is that the D40 and the D80 has several options on the mode dial to help a photographer to easily configure the camera. You find these options in the D80: Automatique Hours (flexible) Shutter Priority Aperture Priority Auto fully automatic manual exposure Vari-Program: Portrait Vari-Program: Landscape Vari-Program: Close Vari-Program: Sports Vari-Program: Landscape Night Vari-Program: The Night Portrait D40x, find the elements following: Programmed Auto (Flexible) Shutter Priority Aperture Priority Auto with fully automatic manual exposure Vari-Program: Flash Off Vari-Program: Portrait Vari-Program: Landscape Vari-program: the child Vari-Program: Sports Vari-Program: Close Vari-Program: The Night Portrait D200, options less Quick: Programmed Auto (Flexible) with automatic shutter-priority auto exposure with full manual aperture priority While the D200 has was a wide range of custom settings for quick setup to coincide with an immediate need (sports, landscape, portrait, etc.) D80 and D40 are much shorter learning curve to bottom: how long you willing to spend learning? If you can take full advantage of capabilities the D200, you will find a permanent digital SLR camera, very capable. If you want a bonus snapshot, then a D40x or D80 would be a better option. This is like having an automatic transmission car against a manual gearbox. The final decision corresponds to the user. If you have any questions, if please ask.
