What is the best SLR camera to purchase a new user?

I've been looking to upgrade my 5 years Fujifilm. I can take a lot of action shots of my children during sports activities in the light of day and night, and I noticed the nights are a little fuzzy. It is like a fog around their body. Any SLR camera to take clearer pictures at night. I had a look online Nikon D40 and the Nikon L100. My budget is around Australian $ 800 or less. I would appreciate any information.
