Only if you’re using the camera in a particularly hostile environment. I’d include sand, snow, mud and water in that category.
Optical glass is extremely tough and difficult to damage and most photographers don’t take their equipment anywhere near the sort of environment that is likely to do damage to a lens.
Adding an additional, relatively cheap, piece of glass to a finely tuned assembly is also likely to cause problems with image quality and autofocus accuracy. If you do feel the need to fit some kind of filter, always choose the highest grade available.
All you really need to do is always use the lens hood, if you have one, and the lens cap when the camera is not in use. If you are planning to use it a lot on the beach or near water, then get a filter, as it will serve to keep particles off the lens. Trying to clean a dirty lens is more likely to damage it than getting the dirt on it.
