How can I disable E-TTL for Canon 420EX?

I tried to understand how to put my flash in manual mode at full power which triggered if no E-TTL. I concluded that I could until my wife was taking pictures today and I realized that the images were washed out. I watched the E-TTL light was off! I do not see how it happened. I have a Rebel XT if that helps.

Hi Andrew, as a user of Canon XT myself, this setting has not been too difficult to find … First, the cooking chamber and press the "Menu" button. You'll see the options and configuration options of the tool head along the top of screen. Second, all cursor movement "to the right (fifth column), and see the selection of tools on page 2. Click 'Set'. Refer to Functions (C. Fn) Press "Set" again … The register 08, is the switching function for the E-TTL II shop, where you can use it with a value of 0 (evaluation), or 1 (Intermediate). It is contained in the product manual supplied with the camera, but instructions are not always clearer … Play with the settings in the functions of their duties … You might be surprised that the unit can (Or not!)
